Program Overview

The organizers of the State of the Arctic Conference are developing an exciting program to engage and support students at the conference.

In addition to providing a travel scholarship program, we will also offer a mentoring program, a luncheon, a dedicated "student meeting room" at the conference, and other activities.

To apply for a travel scholarship or to express interest in participating in other student activities, please read the program requirements below, download and fill out the application form, and email your completed application to Julie Griswold, Student Program Coordinator, at julie [at] arcus [dot] org.

State of the Arctic Conference Student Committee

Who Qualifies as a Student?

Student activities are open to undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent graduates (must have graduated within 2009 and be presenting your graduate work at the conference) who are focused on arctic science, education, policy, or resource management. U.S. and international students are eligible.

Travel Scholarship Award Program

Travel scholarship winners will be selected based on quality of application and need. Travel awards may include registration, airfare, lodging, and/or per diem. The student committee will determine specific award amounts, up to $2,000 per awardee.

Travel scholarship program is currently sponsored with generous contributions from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Arctic Ocean Sciences Board (AOSB)/International Arctic Science Committee (IASC), Department of Energy (DOE) and Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL). AOSB funds will be awarded to students with emphasis on marine research. Conference organizers are actively seeking additional sources of funding.

Awardee Requirements

Successful applicants will be expected to:

• Present a poster.

• Participate fully in the conference sessions.

• Volunteer four (4) hours at the conference. Available volunteer duties are listed in the application.

• Attend one (1) mentoring activity (lunch, breakfast, online meeting; details to be announced).
