The following presentation is an overview of the challenges of measuring precipitation in the Arctic, especially detecting changes in our long-term observatories. The performance characteristics of new in situ sensor technologies are discussed, as well as the evaluation of merged model–observation analyses and satellite-based products. Prospects for the next generation of remote sensing tools are also presented. Finally, remaining gaps in hydroclimate information for research and operational applications are described for the arctic and subarctic domain.
